Program Notes
This piece is inspired by Duke Ellington's Prelude to a Kiss, a tune that has fascinated me for years. It's deeply chromatic and sensual, yet earnest and carefree. In Prelude (After Duke), I have used different elements of that tune to create my own harmonies, textures, and emotional headspaces. It's a bit mysterious! Like Duke's music, it's more complex than it seems on the surface. However, there are plenty of moments of tenderness and exuberance that I feel embody this homage to Duke's musical output.
