"How Can I Keep From Singing?" is an American Baptist hymn composed by Robert W. Lowry around the year 1869. It speaks of the joy and the need to make music, in spite of the "lamentation" of the Earth. It calls to mind the words of the immortal Leonard Bernstein: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." In 2020, the many challenges Americans face both individually and as a nation inspired me to write this arrangement. The music is within us; it is our duty to ourselves and to the world to share it and spread it. How can we keep from making music when those around us so desperately need it?
